Crime in Barnsley is at its lowest level in 17 years and continues to fall.

 From March 2008 to march 2009 all crime in Barnsley has dropped by 9.8% which equates to over 1953 less victims of crime.

Home burglaries have dropped by 10.9%, 256 less reported incidents to Barnsley police.

There are 351 police officers and 169 members of support staff in Barnsley all working together to keep crime at a minimum across the borough.

Police in Barnsley have developed key priorities which have been extended through partner and community consultation.

The key policing priorities in Barnsley 2008-2011 are to:

  • Improve public perception of crime and antisocial behaviour.
  • Tackle crime with a focus on violent crime, domestic violence and relationship to alcohol related harm.
  • Deliver effective and robust offender management.
  • Protect vulnerable communities and deliver a robust partnership enhanced response to public protection.
  • Improve confidence and satisfaction.
  • Deliver effective partnership enhanced neighbourhood policing that addresses local priorities.
  • Ensure the professional well-being and development of our people through the delivery of our human resource programme.

District Commander Andy Brooke, who served as a police constable from 1981 and returned as the Chief Superintendent in 2007, is highly committed to Barnsley's priorities and to attending to the needs of the local community. 

To do this dedicated safer neighbourhood teams have been set up to tackle issues that affect people's day-to-day lives, like criminal damage and nuisance behaviour.

The teams include police officers, special constables and local authority wardens making them multi-agency crimebusters.

Barnsley police have been working closely with the students from the national Diploma in games Design course at Barnsley College to put together an educational interactive game that you can now play.

This game has been designed in order to highlight the consequences of criminal damage and anti social behaviour and the impact that they have on the communities in Barnsley.
