CLARIFICATION

I contacted our Crime Management system Administrator for assistance with your request, when she began the search of our system she has a query and asked us to contact you for clarification:

I do not recognise the ‘Knife feature codes’ however, I can provide a count of offences recorded where a Knife as defined by the Home Office in line with the Knife crime data return where the knife has been used and the victim’s injury is recorded as either of the below -

FATAL

SERIOUS

SLIGHT

THREAT

I can also search for offences where the weapon type DISGUISED KNIFE has been recorded.

Of the above, offences I can provide a breakdown by offence outcome, however the requestor should also be advised regarding the regarding the following change –

The Home Office changed the approach to reviewing outcomes of crimes implemented in South Yorkshire in July 2014, and now a broader framework is now in place. A crime which would have previously been closed as 'undetected' is now given a specific outcome based on the specific circumstances of that crime and therefore any data provided will reflect this change.

Would you like us to continue with your request for information using the criteria – fatal, serious, slight , threat and disguised weapon?

FROM REQUESTOR

Thank you, yes please continue with the request on those lines

SYP Response:

I recontacted our Crime Management System (CMS) Administrator for assistance with your request. The CMS system is used to record complaints or allegations of those matters, which the Home Office specify should be recorded as ‘crimes’.

She provided me with the enclosed data and the following explanation of her search criteria:

Offence recorded by Year – Month –

I have searched CMS for offences recorded on the Crime Register between 01-Jan-2012 and 30-Jun-2017, where a victim is recorded with an Injury type of either FATAL, SERIOUS, SLIGHT or THREATS and weapon type is defined as a ‘KNIFE’ and recorded with the USED flag, broken down by Month and Year the offence was recorded.

Offence recorded by Home Office Class -

Of the above, this count id broken down by the Home Office Offence class and year the offence was recorded.

Victims Injury –

Of the above, this is a breakdown of the victim’s injury.

Please note – more than one victim may be recorded on some offences type, therefore we expect a count of victims to exceed a count of offences. For the purpose of this request, I have searched for offences where a ‘KNIFE’ has been recorded with the USED flag, however other weapon types may be recorded on the crime report in addition to the ‘KNIFE’ and without reviewing each offence, I cannot identify if the KNIFE was the main cause of injury.

Weapon types -

Of the above, this is a breakdown of the weapon type recorded as USED. Please note – more than one weapon type may be recorded on some offences type, therefore we expect a count of weapons to exceed a count of offences. For the purpose of this request, I have searched for offences where a ‘KNIFE’ has been recorded with the USED flag, however other weapon types may be recorded on the crime report in addition to the ‘KNIFE’.
