The information you seek is not held in a single searchable database, therefore I sought the assistance of three different departments:

Question 1

I approached our Police Dog Training Manager, who provided me with the following:

South Yorkshire Police.  2009 / 10.   There were 76 dogs. 40 Police officer handlers.       

South Yorkshire Police.  2010 / 11.   There were 76 dogs. 40 Police officer handlers.      

South Yorkshire Police.  2011 / 12.   There were 76 dogs. 40 Police officer handlers.     

South Yorkshire Police.  2012 / 13.   There were 76 dogs. 40 Police officer handlers.

South Yorkshire Police.  2013 / 14.   There were 76 dogs. 40 Police officer handlers.

South Yorkshire Police.  2014 / 15.   There were 41 dogs. 24 Police officer handlers.

South Yorkshire Police.  2015 /16.    There were 51 dogs. 28 Police officer handlers.

Amalgamation Humberside and South Yorkshire Police.  1st April 2016.

2016/17. There were 51 dogs split between both forces. Dogs retired as a result of amalgamation and age = 18.

2017/18. There are  53 dogs split between the two forces. Dogs retired as a result of age = 1.

Amalgamation Humberside and South Yorkshire ended 1.9.2017

South Yorkshire Police.  2017 /18. There are 30 dogs. 15 handlers.

The Finance Officer within our Joint Specialist Operations Unit has provided me with the following:

Please note that between the 1 April 2016 and 31August 2017 SYP was in collaboration with Humberside and previous costs borne by SYP and some of the costs would have been shared by Humberside.

I then approached our Incident Management System Administrator for records where there has been deployment.  He has advised me of the following:

2012-13 = 18,493

2013-14 = 19,976

2014-15 = 16,330

2015-16 = 12,558

2016-17 = 9,420

2017-18 = 4,222(as at 01.10.2017)
