Today marks the start of Hate Crime Awareness Week, the national week dedicated to bringing people together to raise awareness and tackle hate crime.
The national campaign works with partner agencies, organisations and different charities from across the country to encourage reporting of hate crimes, raise awareness of the impact it has and ensure that anyone who have been affected has access to right support.
To highlight SYP’s support of the campaign, force lead for hate crime, Superintendent Sarah Poolman, said: “Although work continues throughout the year to raise awareness and encourage reporting of hate crimes, Hate Crime Awareness Week provides a great opportunity for communities, partners and police to come together to increase understanding and demonstrate our commitment to tackling hate.
“Throughout the week, there will be different activities taking place across the county to engage with communities, raise awareness of hate crimes and highlight the support that is available for all victims.
“In addition to this awareness work, we are also launching an online pledge, as part of our ongoing Hate Hurts campaign, to take a stand against hate. Throughout the week we will be encouraging as many people as possible to sign up to the pledge by sharing it online and showing hate has no place in South Yorkshire.
“If you would like to take part in this pledge, please go on to our Facebook or Twitter pages to share it #HateHurtsSY
“Tackling hate is a priority for South Yorkshire Police and we are proud to be supporters and contributors to Hate Crime Awareness Week in South Yorkshire.
“I would finally like to reiterate again, if you have been a victim of, or have witnessed a hate crime, please report it and help us put a stop to it. Hate Hurts. “
