Roads Policing
With 30 million vehicles in Great Britain, the roads are extremely busy and their unlawful and antisocial use effects people’s safety and sense of security.
Unsafe road use also contributes to the 3,500 people killed and 35,000 people seriously injured each year on our roads.
That’s where the Road Policing Group come in looking to reduce the number of casualties on South Yorkshire's roads and make them a safer place for everyone.
The group has responsibility for policing South Yorkshire's motorway network and other major roads, and is split into two sections – one covering Doncaster and Rotherham and the other covering Sheffield and Barnsley.
As well as providing numerous car patrols, the Road Policing Group also has dedicated partnership officers, and specialist units as described below:
Collision Investigations Branch
This full-time team consists of seven highly trained officers who attend all fatal and life changing collisions carrying out reconstructions, site surveys and vehicle examinations.
It is the role of the Collision Investigators to provide an unbiased and detailed report on scientific and physical evidence found at the scene of a collision.
Their investigations look at the vehicles involved in the collision, the road and other surfaces in order to determine a cause and any potential fault.
Motorcycle Wing
Police motorcyclists are mainly used for road patrols during the ‘rush-hour’ to respond to incidents with greater ease and speed than police cars.
Their machines (presently BMW K100 and Honda Pan European motor cycles for all you bike enthusiasts!) are equipped with speed detection equipment, which is easily operated by the rider via remote switches on the handlebars.
The wing is heavily involved in the education strategy of the department having organised the very successful BIKESAFE initiative.
The officers also deliver Civilian Advisory Courses for members of the police who ride and for the public in general.
