Crown Prosecution Service (CPS)
The Crown Prosecution Service is responsible for prosecuting people charged with a criminal offence. They review cases submitted by police, decide charges in all but minor cases, and prepare and present cases in court.
Her Majesty’s Court Service (HMCS)
Her Majesty's Court Service is responsible for the effective administration of the criminal courts across South Yorkshire. It supports the magistrates and judges in their independent role.
Her Majesty’s Prison Service (HMPS)
Her Majesty’s Prison Service is responsible for keeping in custody those who have been committed by the courts. It gives offenders the skills to help them reduce the risk of re-offending and integrate better into society
The National Probation Service is responsible for reducing re-offending, ensuring proper punishment of offenders, ensuring that offenders are aware of the effects of their crimes and rehabilitation
People United Against Crime is a charity that aims to reduce antisocial behaviour and the negative impact of drugs and alcohol. It also focuses on reducing crimes against businesses and developing safer, more harmonious communities.
The prison and youth offending institute in Doncaster were built by the prison service and both are managed by Serco Home Affairs.
South Yorkshire Criminal Justice Board
The board was set up in April 2003 to oversee the criminal justice system (CJS) in South Yorkshire, and consists of members from the following criminal justice agencies: the police, the crown prosecution service (CPS), the courts, probation, prisons and youth offending teams (YOTs).
Victim Support South Yorkshire
Victim Support helps South Yorkshire residents cope with the effects of crime. They provide confidential support and information to victims of crime and to witnesses attending local courts.
The CJS website provides the public with information to assist if they have been a victim, witness or a defendant.
