Officers investigating the death of a pedestrian near Maltby earlier this year are appealing for an important witness to contact them, to assist with their enquiries.

Emergency services were called to Common Lane between Ravenfield Common and Braithwell at around 8.20pm on Thursday 14 March, after reports a pedestrian had been hit by a car.

Darren Smith, 42, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Our officers believe that another man was walking along that stretch of road at the time of the collision and would like him to contact them.

PC Richard Thorley from South Yorkshire Police’s Serious Collisions Unit explains: “We believe this man, and potential witness, may have spoken to an officer in a marked patrol car that night. We would very much like to identify this man as we think he may have witnessed the collision in which Mr Smith sadly died.”

The IOPC are currently investigating the contact South Yorkshire Police had with Mr Smith earlier that evening.

If you have any information about the collision, or you were in the area that evening, please contact us on 101 quoting incident number 867 of 14 March.
