A 19-year-old man has been found guilty for causing death by dangerous driving after colliding with 62-year-old Susan Gravel on Saturday 11 March 2017.

Jerry James Smith, of HMP Doncaster was found guilty today, Friday 21 June, following a four day trial at Sheffield Crown Court. He was sentenced to 13 years behind bars.

On Saturday 11 March officers spotted a grey coloured BMW on land adjacent to Station Road in Stainforth, Doncaster. Officers in their unmarked car approached the BMW as they believed it to be displaying false registration plates.

The car sped off and travelled towards Emerson Avenue where it collided with another car, causing damage. The BMW failed to stop and continued towards Station Road. Officers stopped at the scene and supported the driver of the damaged car.

Moments later while on scene, officers became aware that the BMW had been involved in a collision on Station Road with a pedestrian.

The court heard how Smith, driver of the BMW failed to stop after colliding at a high speed with Susan who was crossing the road. Susan was taken to hospital but sadly died later that day.

Sergeant Richard Hunter said Smith showed no thought for the people around him and the devastating effects his careless actions could cause: “Smith not only caused the death of an innocent woman, he also put the lives of other pedestrians and road users in danger.

“It is deplorable that someone would leave the scene of an accident, let alone one where someone was seriously injured, and since that tragic day, Smith has continued to show no remorse for his actions.

“My officers have worked extremely hard on this investigation and I am pleased that a substantial sentence has been given. I would like to commend PC Paula Townsend and Family Liaison Officer PC Lynda Washington for their dedication and professionalism throughout.

“Susan’s family have been extremely brave through this difficult time and I hope they can find comfort in today’s result.”
