Today, 19 July, South Yorkshire Police (SYP) once again opens up applications for new police officers.
SYP is now welcoming applications to the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship route as it continues its biggest recruitment drive in living memory which will see 1,400 officers join the force by March 2023. Applications are encouraged from people across all communities and cultures, and from all backgrounds - whether a sixth form or college leaver or someone simply looking for a career change.
Chief Constable Lauren Poultney said: “I am delighted to announce South Yorkshire Police is now open for police officer applications.
“A career in policing is not your everyday job. You will be taking up a role that requires you to routinely do what most others couldn’t or wouldn’t. You will be the person our community looks to for help, safety and care and you truly will be making a difference to the communities you will be working to protect.
“South Yorkshire Police is one of the highest performing forces in the country and we have great aspirations to be the very best we can be for our communities. We are a full spectrum force which means we have a wide range of roles including a dog section, mounted section, specialist firearms officers and we serve a diverse mix of 1.4million people across a varied range of settings.
“We have the challenges and opportunities you find in an inner city setting and the equal but different challenge of our rural communities. This means we can offer you a breadth of experience in a short time, we can keep you busy, stimulated and above all we can enable you to reach your full potential, helping us to reach ours.
“We are looking for problem solvers, quick thinkers, people who care but can enforce. We’re looking for the best available and if you believe that is you, we look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you into our brilliant force.”
The opportunity to apply to join South Yorkshire Police runs for six weeks from 19 July 2021, closing at midnight on 31 August 2021.
As part of SYP’s activity to encourage people to apply, a short video highlighting the various roles available across the force has been created and will be shared over the recruitment period.
The Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship route is one of three entry routes as part of the Policing Education Qualifications Framework, which also includes an option for existing degree holders or an option for those who want to study first. At this time, South Yorkshire Police is not accepting applications from those wanting to join the degree holder’s option.
To provide more information on a career in policing, SYP and Sheffield Hallam University will hold a virtual summer school between 27-29 July 2021. The three-day event will cover the recruitment process, everything you need to know about higher education in policing and working for South Yorkshire Police. To register for a place at the event, visit shu.ac.uk/policing-courses.
