Sheffield man jailed for sexual offences against children

A Sheffield man has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to sexual offences against children.

Wesley Hedge, 72, of Dunkeld Road, Sheffield, pleaded guilty to six offences, including indecent assault on a girl under 16 years old at a hearing on 24 August 2021 and was sentenced for his crimes at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday 3 November 2021.

Hedge’s offences were committed between 1978 and 1980 and relate to one victim.

Temporary Detective Sergeant Susi Taylor said: “Hedge is starting a lengthy prison sentence for his crimes, which have had a devastating and lasting impact on his victim.

“I want to praise the victim in this case for their bravery in reporting Hedge’s crimes, it is absolutely right that he is now behind bars for what he has done.

“It is so important that any victim of sexual abuse feels they can speak out and seek help and support, we are here to listen and will always strive to bring offenders before the courts.

“The ripple effects of crimes such as Hedge’s are significant, I am pleased with the sentence he has received.

“I want to reassure the public that South Yorkshire Police is committed to investigating all reports and we have specially trained officers and partner agencies who can offer support and advice.

“In some cases, it takes a relative, family member, friend or loved one to take those first steps so my message is to everyone, if you have concerns, speak to us.

“Your actions could help safeguard or protect someone who is vulnerable, and they could also bring offenders to justice.”
