Last week we held our force awards, where we celebrated officers, staff, volunteers and community members from across South Yorkshire who have gone above and beyond in their role during the last 12 months.

Picking up the Special Constable of the year award was Barnaby Peech, who had been nominated an impressive seven times!

Barnaby has worked as a Special Constable for four years based in Ecclesfield. He has been described as enthusiastic and always willing to help, regularly coming in on days off for pre-planned operations and events. He is always ready to learn new skills and support his colleagues in the response team.

Over the last two years he has done more than six times his minimum hours and has received letters of appreciation from members of the public and senior officers.

Special Constable Barnaby Peech said: “It was a real honour to be nominated for this award and amazing to actually win it. I love being a Special Constable and giving something back to the community. Over the last few years I have learnt so much that has enabled me to apply and be successful in becoming a regular officer.”

Special Chief Officer Stephen Merrett said: “Barnaby is a real credit to the Special Constabulary and the force. His work ethic and dedication is exactly what we look for in a Special Constable. To be nominated seven times is testimony to what his colleagues think of him and I am so pleased he has been honoured at this year’s force awards.

“Special Constables are an invaluable support to the force and add resilience to officers. They receive the same training and have the same powers as regular officers. Reading the nominations for Barnaby reinforces how much Special Constables are needed and are thought of by their colleagues. Well done Barnaby.”

We are recruiting Special Constables at the moment. If you think you could volunteer with us as little as 16 hours a month, we would love to hear from you.
