The players, the teams, the games. The highs, the lows. The winners, the losers. The togetherness and the camaraderie.

The 2018 World Cup in Russia is finally here. Are you excited about the tournament? Or are you sick of it already?

Whichever camp you fall into, the force wants everyone in South Yorkshire to have a great time over the next month and drink responsibly through our #DrinkSafeSY campaign.

Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley, the officer in charge of our policing operation, said: “Whether you’re travelling to Russia or celebrating locally, we have officers working across South Yorkshire on key dates, times and at key locations to keep people safe and to deal with anyone causing trouble who is intent on spoiling the party atmosphere.

“We know that thousands of people will be watching the games with many of you getting together in local pubs and bars to sample the unique atmosphere that a big tournament brings. We want you to have fun, or as much as you can depending on how your team is doing!

“Enjoy a drink or two but consider others around you and don’t go too far. Alcohol can ruin your judgement and it can have a real, lasting impact on people’s lives, including your own, ending in antisocial behaviour, drink-driving, domestic abuse or sexual offences.

“Lots of work has already taken place to ensure your safety during the World Cup. Officers have spoken with licensees in all areas of South Yorkshire to provide general safety advice and specific guidance ahead of local events, and we’ve visited potential victims of domestic abuse, and known offenders, to provide guidance and offer signposting to relevant agencies.”

If you see our officers out and about during the World Cup, don’t hesitate to approach them, ask questions or let them know if you see any suspicious behaviour. You can always #copaselfie and share it with us on social media, using #WorldCup2018 to show how South Yorkshire is getting into the party spirit.

Are you travelling to Russia to watch some of the games?

Police nationally have been working with Russian authorities to ensure a safe and trouble-free tournament and we advise travelling supporters to view the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) travel advice if you require further information.

The FCO will be providing up-to-date advice for fans in Russia throughout the tournament. The latest information can be found at the FCO’s Be on the Ball website.

There will be a policing operation at Doncaster Sheffield Airport during the World Cup. This will involve high-visibility officers with blue and yellow tabards at the airport providing advice to those travelling to the Russia, proactively checking for banned suspects attempting to fly out of the country.
