Officers from Doncaster’s tasking teams, off-road bike team and specialist prison search staff came together over the weekend as part of a joint operation tackling criminality at one of the town’s prisons.
The activity is part of a number of ongoing operations to support prison staff across Doncaster, identify any offences being committed and ensure those visiting the prison, as well as staff, are kept safe.
This time, officers were at HMP Hatfield carrying out searches both inside and outside of the prison, welcoming and checking visitors on Saturday.
Detective Inspector Steve Smith, leading the operation, said: “Throughout the morning, three vehicles were searched, under the Misuse of Drugs Act and as a result, two men were identified as having committed an offence.
“A 21-year-old man from Hull was reported on summons for possession of cannabis while a 22-year-old man from Mexborough was issued with a caution for possession of cannabis.
“It’s really important that we make it clear, and send out a strong message to inmates that criminality inside prisons will not be tolerated. Anyone found to be visiting the prison can also expect to be searched and if found to be carrying any illegal or prohibited items, will be dealt with accordingly.
“In addition to the enforcement work carried out, we also visited every house around HMP Hatfield, encouraging people to sign up to SYP Alerts to receive crime prevention advice and updates for the area. Every household visited was given a crime prevention booklet as well and property marking pens.”
