A group of men and women, known as the Wise Old Owls, have received vital information on the latest scams and how to protect themselves.
The retired Sheffield Wednesday supporters were recently visited by Fraud Protect Officer Andy Foster, who delivered a presentation on the latest frauds, with a focus on Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud.
Andy explained to the over 140 members that APP fraud is when a customer authorises payment directly to a scammer, often posting as their banks ‘fraud team’ or those posing as police officers.
Recently released UK finance figures have shown that APP fraud cost customers £228million from personal accounts and £126million from business scams in 2018, with over 84,600 APP scams taking place that year.
Andy then went on to talk about crime prevention and personal safety advice.
John Preen, Chairman of the Wise Old Owls, wrote to Andy the day after the presentation, thanking him.
He said: “I would like to thank you on behalf of the Wise Old Owls for the excellent talk provided once again to our members.
“The content of your talk was spot on and many were talking about it after it concluded, remarking on what a wonderful insight it was in to stopping, or not making it easy for fraudsters and burglars for example, to con us in our dwindling years.
“Once more, many thanks Andy for your fabulous contribution.”
